A TANZANIAN ADVENTURE
The little visited Selous Game Reserve with 54,600 sqkms. is probably the world’s largest game reserve, and could be called East Africa’s true wilderness. It is wild and largely untouched by people.
The Ruaha National Park was carved out of half of the Rungwa Game Reserve and it covers 13,000 square km. It is a wild and undeveloped area and access to it is difficult, but with a plentiful array of wildlife as a result. The Great Ruaha River which forms the eastern boundary of the park has spectacular gorges.
Day 1, 2+3 – Selous
Transfer to the Dar-es-Salaam airport for the flight to the Selous. The landscape consists of extensive Miombo woodland, grassland and the flood-plains of the great Rufiji River. The whole area is uninhabited apart from a few safari camps, and the feeling of venturing into an unknown wilderness invites the thought that the landscape must be much the same as when the Explorer, Dr. Livingstone, ventured into the heart of Africa in the mid-19th century on his first explorations into East Africa. A late afternoon boat ride on the Rufiji River. Overnight Selous Safari Camp.
The second day is a full day’s game viewing with picnic lunch. Game is plentiful but requires more patience to spot than in the parks of Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Meals and overnight Selous Safari Camp.
The third day commences with an early morning walking safari accompanied by an armed ranger and professional guide. Learn about bush lore, territorial and feeding habits of the animals and many other points of interest. Enjoy a picnic breakfast in the bush before returning to camp. Afternoon boat trip on the Rufiji River. Tall and ancient Borassic palms dot the landscape and tower above the river banks where hippo and crocodile abound and the birdlife provides never ending colour and movement.
Meals + overnight Selous Safari Camp.
Day 4, 5+6 – Ruaha
An early morning walking or boat safari in the Selous. After breakfast fly to Ruaha National Park, one of Tanzania’s newest parks, but due to its remoteness, one of the least visited. Afternoon game viewing, meals and overnight Jongmero Safari Camp.
The next two full days of game viewing in Ruaha noted for its large elephant population and uncommon species of antelope such as kudu, roan and sable. Hippo and crocodile abound in the Great Ruaha river. There are a number of photographic blinds overlooking waterholes, where the animals can be observed from close-up.
Meals and overnight Jongmero Safari Camp, situated on the banks of Jongmero sand river. There are only 8 tents, each with en-suite bath.
Day 7 – Dar-es-Salaam
Morning at leisure and after an early lunch, fly back to Dar-es-Salaam, for onward arrangements.
